Variety: Chardonnay
Alex and Christoph are two German natives who were both bit by the Burgundy wine bug. Coming from Dresden and Baden respectively, the two met in Beaune, Burgundy where they spent time combined working under de Montille, Pierre Morey, Leflaive, etc. Wasenhaus, named for the farmhouse in which Christophe’s family grew up, is a new project starting in just 2018. As such, the wines represent an under the radar part of Germany known as Baden in the southwest, which is actually a fairly short two hour drive to Burgundy. The project has several focuses for their wines; the estate wines which are basic by default, though anything but, the ‘soil-level’ wines and then the single vineyard wines. Farming is organic with biodynamic practices interspersed; winemaking is low-intervention. Keep an eye on this miniscule new German producer as they are clearly just getting started.
Chardonny has been growing in Baden since the 1980s. It is treated like the more well-known Burgundies just a couple hours away driving, though this is lifted and a bit more precise with just as much concentration. The wine ages for a year and a half, some of which is in used barrels.
