Les Monts Damnes — the ‘damned mountains’ — is the steepest, most punishing hillside in Chavignol, and quite possibly the greatest single site in all of Sancerre. The Kimmeridgian marl here is the same rock that gives Chablis its bones, and the slope is so sharp that everything must be worked by hand. Thomas-Labaille selects the best lots from their old vines on this legendary cru, ferments with native yeasts, ages in 600-liter foudres, and bottles unfiltered. This is Sancerre at its most profound — a wine built for the cellar.
