This is a special release from Casa San Matas created to mark 20 years of Rey Sol. Its taken well beyond typical extra aejo aging, spending a full decade in French oak, which puts it in a completely different category in terms of depth and structure.
The extended time in barrel gives it a much more developed profile than most tequilas. The nose leans rich and layered, with cooked agave still present but wrapped in caramel, dried fruit, and toasted oak. On the palate, its full and structured, showing dark chocolate, spice, roasted nuts, and a deeper, almost brandy or whiskey-like character from the French oak. The texture is dense and coating, with a long, warming finish that carries both sweetness and spice.
Even with the heavy barrel influence, theres still enough agave to keep it grounded. It doesnt read like a typical tequila, but it doesnt lose itself either.
The presentation is part of the identity here. The signature sun-shaped decanter is designed as a display piece, and this anniversary release leans even further into that collectible side.
This is firmly a sipping tequila. Big, layered, and built for slow drinking. Its less about purity and more about what extended aging can do when its handled carefully.
