The Wine
Well balanced, this is a dry wine with a light citrus and honey bouquet. Ripe and forward fruit comes through with bright, delicious ripe citrus and distinctive mineral flavors; very impressive feel on the palate with great complexity that totally delivers.
The area’s Silex soils are what lend Sancerre their uniqueness in the world of Sauvignon Blancs. In this case, the Silex soils are in Andre’s vineyard next to the Charme forest, where he has flint soil with no limestone, yielding strongly exotic, perfumed flavors.
Andr specifically designed this vineyard for lower yield. This soil gives the most fruit flavors for the Sauvignon Blanc, but he also blends about 20% of vines planted in limestone soils for
a touch of smokiness.
Pairings: Especially nice with shellfish and seafood and of course with a nice fresh chevre.
The Winery
Andr Vatan took over the helm of his familys vineyard when his father unexpectedly passed away in 1988. The winery has a collection of about 9 small buildings that have the appearance of a rural hamlet and which the neighbors lovingly call Vatanville.
Its very neat and tidy, in keeping with Andrs character – he is obsessive whit his attention to detail in all aspects of his life, not just his winemaking. From his clean, well-organized cellars to the stakes of his neatly aligned vineyards, everything is perfect.
There are four vineyards in the Vatan estate, all located around the winery and raised with carefully controlled yields, as Andrwould have nothing else! Andr and his wife, Arielle, have worked tirelessly to create a highly respected winery with wines that have earned a good reputation and are now in high demand.
